Leatherback Turtles are one of the rarest sea turtle. Larry leads
expeditions around the world to monitor and track these great
reptiles. We will get an update on his latest travels and what is in
store for the future. Also, he will provide information about
opportunities to join him. He has information about how we can
participate in future expeditions. They go to exotic parts of the
world and since they are part of a scientific study, qualify as tax
deductible. It might be something worth considering as a dive trip
for next year.

High Island Bird Sanctuary
High Island consists of 4 different
Bird Sanctuaries. Spring migration is between March and May. The
rookery is full of nesting birds around mid-April. A fee is charged
at High Island to help defray the costs of maintenance, utilities
and improvements. A day pass costs $5, or for $25 a patch may be
purchased which gives you an unlimited number of admissions to all
High Island sanctuaries for one year.

sustainable environment.
Jim Rosborough will share his experience in volunturism on
projects doing marine research with Earthwatch over the past
13 years. Jim has worked on projects in Belize, Aruba,
Jamaica, Barbados, Exuma Cays, Puerto Rico, Bonaire, San
Salvador, Hawaii, Thailand and St. John. Earthwatch is
currently organizing research projects in the Seychelles and
Thailand. Jim led a trip to Belize in March and will be
repeating this in 2010.

Guest speaker is
Dennis Casey from the
NASA NBL (Neutral Buoyancy Lab) to come to our September
24th general meeting to talk to us about what is that the
NASA NBL dive team does in preparing our Astronauts and the
other Foreign countries that work with the ISS and Shuttle
team for their next
space flight. Dennis said he would try and bring some neat
stuff used in the training to the meeting. Dennis got his
open water certification in 1983 and his Dive Master
certification in 1987. He then went on to get his captain's
license in 1989 and captained the Spree and the Fling for a
number of years.
So be sure to mark your calendar and bring a guest to this
fun and interesting presentation.

will be doing a presentation on general equipment
comparisions. This will be a good opportunity to discuss the
variations in equipment available. I know that I am always
looking to learn more about equipment and what differences
there are in regulators, fins and BCs. Dennis represents
various manufacturers and is very knowledgeable. Also, I am
sure there are a lot of old salts in the club that will have
an opinion or two worth sharing. We should be in for a very
educational, informative, and if I know Capt Waldo…. a fun
night. |

Manvel is located at Hwy 6 and 288 South. Set up in the
usual place – in the middle on the far side of the lake.
Probably smoke some chicken and grill some hotdogs.
Bring some chips and beverages and we will share. There
is always plenty of food. Everybody is welcome – divers,
non-divers… it is a great day in the sun and water. If
you haven’t been to Twin Lakes – it has a fill station,
they rent tanks. Also, Jim will be bringing extra tanks
and stuff. You are welcome to use them so long as you
pay for the refills.

This month we are please to
have Moody Gardens Aquarium. Jay Reynolds has a presentation that goes over the
basics of what is expected of dive volunteers. He will discuss what
a typical day might be like and what volunteers can expect to do. He
will talk about the different exhibits that volunteers may get to
dive. Jay will cover the training program as it stands right now,
and briefly discuss what he would like to see developed in the near
future, i.e. a scientific diving course. Also, he will talk about some of my recent
scientific diving experiences.

30th. Funds raised through this
event will be used to support conservation programs and promote
conservation awareness through education.Bay Area Divers will
have a booth. We need people to help out and man the booth. Please
